How to Get a KRA Tax Compliance Certificate — and Keep It

Tax CompliancePublished September 2026·6 min read·By the Probity Finance team

The Tax Compliance Certificate (TCC) has quietly become the most valuable document a Kenyan business can hold. Government tenders demand it, county licences demand it, employers demand it from new hires and banks increasingly ask for it before extending facilities. It is free, it is applied for online — and it is refused automatically the moment your tax affairs slip.

What a TCC actually certifies

A TCC is KRA's confirmation that you have filed all returns and paid all taxes due across every obligation on your PIN — income tax, VAT, PAYE, turnover tax, rental income, all of them. It is valid for twelve months from the date of issue, and anyone you present it to can verify it in seconds using the certificate checker on iTax or the KRA M-Service app. A forged or expired certificate is caught instantly, so the only reliable strategy is to genuinely qualify.

Who will ask you for one

How the application works

  1. Log in to iTax, go to Certificates → Apply for Tax Compliance Certificate.
  2. State the reason for the application (tender, employment, licence) and submit.
  3. iTax runs an automatic check across all your tax obligations. If everything is clean, the certificate is generated and emailed to you — often the same day.
  4. If anything is outstanding, the application is rejected with the reasons listed.
The check got stricter:

KRA's enhanced TCC process now also verifies eTIMS compliance for businesses and individuals with non-employment income, and checks your VAT standing. A business that files returns but has never onboarded onto eTIMS can now fail a TCC check on that ground alone — see our eTIMS guide.

Why applications fail — and the fixes

Nearly every rejection traces back to one of four things: an unfiled return somewhere on your PIN (often a nil return for a dormant obligation you forgot you registered for), an unpaid balance including old penalties and interest, a mismatch between your filings and KRA's eTIMS data, or an obligation that should have been cancelled when the business changed. The fix is methodical: pull your ledger on iTax, file every missing return including nil returns, then deal with the balance.

If the outstanding amount is genuinely wrong — a penalty applied in error, a payment not captured — raise the dispute on iTax rather than paying quietly. If the amount is right but cash is tight, KRA can approve a payment plan; taxpayers honouring an agreed plan are generally able to obtain a certificate while paying down the balance.

Staying tender ready all year

Because a TCC application is a full body scan of your tax affairs, the businesses that get certificates on demand are simply the ones that are current every month. That means every return filed by its deadline — see the compliance calendar — every payment made on time and eTIMS invoices transmitting. Apply for renewal about three weeks before your current certificate expires, because a tender rarely waits for you to fix two years of nil returns.
